Ernest Thomas Smith “Ernie” of Plum, 72, died Thursday May 17, 2018 at the VA Hospital in Pittsburgh following several years of dementia. He was survived by his beloved wife and keeper of his heart Sally Smith of 51 years. Ernie and Sally have been sweethearts since the eighth grade. Ernie was a proud Vietnam veteran of the Navy Seabee’s which he was stationed in Antartica. After his service to our country he worked at the Chatham Center as a local 95 Stationary Engineer for 30 years. Ernie also owned and operated Smith Heating and Cooling for 34 years. His hard work and determination of providing for his family will never be unrecognized. Ernie was a prime example of work hard, play harder. As an avid golfer, Ernie enjoyed his weekend rounds with friends and was known on the course as “Dr. Smith”. Ernie highly enjoyed many years of camping with his family, bringing countless memories that will be forever remembered. His love for unique campers, dune buggies and campsites made every trip a special event for his family. Ernie is survived by his sister-in-law Sue Kelly (Suebee) and husband Fred Kelly, Uncle of Chrissy and Chris Simmons, Sandy and Matthew Aubele, Fred and Kelly Kelly. Great Uncle to Logan, Brody and Parker Simmons, Hunter and Cooper Aubele, Presley and Graham Kelly. Friends and Family are welcome to Soxman Funeral Homes Ltd., Roth Chapel, 7450 Saltsburg Road (at Universal Road) Penn Hills, where a Service will be held, Thursday evening, 6:00 pm.
