Before the business and legal issues of the estate can be pursued, it will be necessary to obtain certified copies of the death certificate. You can order them from the Funeral Director. It is always better to order a few more than what you think you will need. Most agencies will only accept certified death certificates and not photocopies.
Death certificates are available during the month that the death occurs for $6/copy. Following the month of death, the certificates go on file with the State and are $9/copy and may not be readily available. Veterans and spouses of veterans are entitled to certified copies of death certificates at no charge with the appropriate documentation.
